The Three Doshas

The oldest systems of healing are often the best and most reliable, and one of the oldest systems of health and healing is Ayurveda. Ayurveda was developed over 3,000 years ago in India, and is among one of the most ancient forms of holistic (whole-body) healing systems that is still prevalent today. Ayurveda is held in the belief that the mind, body, and spirit all must work together in order to achieve a balance of full healing. If you begin to study Ayurveda, and want to practice and reap it’s benefits in your own life, you must figure out what your dosha is. So, what exactly is a dosha?

To quote Eat, Taste, Heal “Have you ever wondered what actually accounts for differences in people? Why are some people hyperactive and fast moving, while others exude grace and stillness? Why can some people eat a five-course meal with ease, while others can barely finish a salad? Why are some people inherently joyous, while others carry the weight of the world on their shoulders? Modern genetics offers some insight, but what about the characteristics and idiosyncrasies that make every person unique? Ayurveda answers all of these questions with the Three Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

The doshas are biological energies found throughout the human body and mind. They govern all physical and mental processes and provide every living being with an individual blueprint for health and fulfillment.

The doshas derive from the Five Elements and their related properties. Vata is composed of Space and Air, Pitta of Fire and Water, and Kapha of Earth and Water.”

So, let’s break them down:

Vata- The term Vata means “wind” or “the air that moves things,” and is associated with Space. Those who have Vata type personalities are creative, quick to learn and grasp new knowledge, lively, fun, and excitable. They tend to be unpredictable, spontaneous, and impulsive. Physically they tend to be tall, slender, with colder hands and extremities. They often have dry hair and skin. Vata’s can be “spacey” and tend to forget easily, or be flakey when expectations are put on them. Their schedules aren’t often structured, and easily change. They have high energy that burns out quickly, and can be easily agitated with anxiety, fear and worry.

Pitta-  Those who are more Pitta dominant are of medium build and physique, they are strong and well-built. They are often confident, structured, and detail oriented. They lean towards the passionate and romantic side, and often can become dominating and pushy when heated. They have strong appetites, to match their strong will, with great digestion.  They are subject to agitation, anger, and impatience. They often have fair skin and red hair, and are prone to rashes, inflammation, acne, and conditions of the skin.

They are very faithful and loyal and have tremendous amount of love to give. They are often larger in build, heavier, and often slow in speech and doing. They often have soft skin and hair, with larger eyes. They are gentle in life, but are also prone to depression. Slow learners. They are not easily upset, irritated and have a huge amount of patience. They tend to be in good health, with a great immune system, but tend to have sluggish digestion.

Great post. I recently attended two ayurvedic massage courses in Goa, India. We touched briefly on the dosha types and I was amazed to be able to identify immediately my daughters doshas. One is vata and the other kapha.
