Embracing Your Moon Cycle (or, dealing with your period)


It’s at the doorstep. Maybe you don’t even need to mark it down, because the tell-tale signs always rear their ugly head. You’re snapping at your boss, or you’re crying over a Cheetos commercial. Your bloated as all hell and your pants don’t fit. Maybe it was the Cheetos. No, you know it’s on it’s way. Another month, another Moon cycle. She’s coming.

Okay, maybe that was a bit of a dramatic rendition of your monthly period, but it’s how many of us have come to deal with it. It seems such an inconvenience- the bloating, PMS, cramps. The desire to eat chocolate at 2 am. That’s the package that comes, and we just push it out of our minds and deal with it for 1 out of every 4 weeks. Life as a woman.

Does it have to be seen that way? Of course not! Have you ever stopped to really, really embrace your monthly cycle? Or give it notice other than an inconvenience? Consider the death and rebirth that your body brings each month: clearing out the old, making way for the new. Replenishing and refreshing your sacred womb space, while you go about your day completely unaware. It truly is a beautiful thing. In fact, until a few century ago, embracing the monthly cycle with the other women in your life was a highly appreciated privilege. Women who are in close quarters sync together, and cycle together, inside of the “Red Tent.” This is where women would go, together. They had 5 days of bonding while cycling, where the stories of their people, legends, traditions, and even gossip would be passed to one another and then passed down to the children. They could cook, talk, cry, and groom one another all within the sacred tent. This is when women were stronger together- before that angry distrust popped up within the hearts of women, misguided at each other. In fact, some say that they reason women are distrusting of one another, is that fact the we no longer hold the red tent ceremonies.

Here are some ways you can embrace your Moon Cycle:

  • Write your feelings in a journal
  • Practice a soft & gentle Yin yoga practice
  • Perform a renewal ritual
  • Set an intention for the new cycle ahead
  • Use the time of heightened creativity to make an art piece
  • Write a poem
